08/01/2020

GAYA: The five-day-long teaching schedule of Buddhist spiritual leader His holiness the Dalai Lama ended on Monday. The programme began on January 2 with his teachings to his followers on how to develop virtues of compassion and renunciation of worldly pleasures and exchange of own happiness with other people’s pain among others.

Several thousand followers of the Dalai Lama from different countries of the world, including USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Korea and Taiwan among others participated in the programme. Hollywood actor Richard Gere, a prominent follower of the Buddhist spiritual leader, especially flew in to participate on all the five days of the special teaching programme.

Besides giving tips on acquisition of wisdom and futility of worldly possessions, the Dalai Lama also introduced the initiation protocol and completed the wheel of teachings of Manjushri, the gentle glory associated with the path of wisdom. On the final day of the programme, longevity pills- a sacred eatable was distributed among the participants. Monks holding the longevity pill in bamboo baskets moved among the participants distributing the pill believed to give more years to the recipient’s life. The devotees also prayed for the spiritual leader’s long life and good health. A few years ago, the spiritual leader had to abandon the Kalchakra Puja mid-way on account of health issues.

Earlier, on November 10 last year, the 84-year-old Dalai Lama had said that he had a dream about his life extending to 113 years.

Besides the followers from across the world, several high-ranking Tibetan monks and senior officials of the Tibetan administration in exile participated in the programme, which was broadcast live on FM in different languages including Hindi and Tibetan. Each teaching session lasted about 90 minutes.

According to sources, chief minister Nitish Kumar may shortly visit Bodh Gaya to meet the Dalai Lama. For the last many years, the CM makes it a point to meet the Dalai Lama whenever the spiritual leader is in Bodh Gaya. On his part, Dalai Lama has been profusely praising the CM and lauding the prohibition policy of his government.

Before his proposed departure on January 17, Dalai Lama is scheduled to visit IIM Bodh Gaya on January 14.
