Inclusion of Bhoti Language in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India

Bhoti language is spoken by over 2.65 million Buddhist  population of India,  who are mostly  living in the Himalayan region of north India,  spread over in seven  states i.e. Sikkim , Ladakh ( J&K), Arunachal Pradesh, Himanchal Pradesh ( Lahul&Spiti ) Uttarakhand and West Bengal.The language has a rich collection of literature, history, philosophy, medicines and astrology etc.

The demand for inclusion of Bhoti language in the 8th Schedule of the constitution is pending for a long time, for last 35 years, in consideration of the Government of India. Under the valuable guidance of Ven. Lama ChosphelZotpa, President, Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association (HBCA), the Bhoti speaking people of the Himalayan region have been struggling   for their legitimate demand.A case study of Bhoti Language ; Planning forrecognisation and Development had been carried out by the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, the CIIL on the basis of its finding recommended for inclusion and recognisation of the Bhoti language in the  8thschedule.

Latest,  a 20 member delegation  from the seven states  led by Lama Chospel Zotpa, presented a memorandum to Ho'ble Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh  on 10th January 2019  in  Delhi, seeking his intervention for  fulfilment of this  long- standing demand . Ho’ble Home Minister assured his full support for the demand, and assured that the matter will be brought to the attention of the Ho’ble Prime Minister again.

Earlier, a day-long Workshop on  " Preservation and Promotion of Bhoti language " was organised by the Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association (HBCA)  on 13th December, 2018 at VishwaYuvak Kendra in Chanakyapuri, Delhi. A delegation representing Bhoti speaking people from Himalayan region metShriKirenRijiju, Ho'ble MOS (Home) on the same day, and requested his help for early favourable decision  on Bhoti language by  the Government.

Ven. Lama ChospelZotpa, President, Himalayan Buddhist Culture Association (HBCA ) is also currently holding the position  of Honorary Secretary , International Buddhist Federation ( IBC).
