INTERNATIONAL TRIPITAKA CHANTING HELD IN LUMBINI, NEPAL

Lumbini: The first international Tripitaka Chanting program was conducted from Nov. 14 to 16, 2018 in Lumbini, the birthplace of Sakyamuni Buddha. The Tripitaka recitation in participation of international Buddhist community is the first event of its kind in the Buddhist history of Nepal.  

The program jointly organized by the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT); All Nepal Bhikkhu Association (ANBA); and the Royal Thai Monastery was attended by about 700 monks and nuns and thousands of aspirants from 18 countries. The three-day recitation marked very special spiritual event in Lumbini. 

ANBA Chairman Ven. Maitri Mahathero; LDT Vice Chairman Ven. Metteyya Sakyaputta; Ven. Pradhambodhivong, Thai Chief Ecclesiastical Ambassador to Nepal and India; Thai Ambassador for Nepal, His Excellency Bhakavat Tansku; lawmaker Hon. Durga Upadhyay; Province Assembly Member Hon. Fakruddin Khan; Mayor of Lumbini Cultural Municipality Mr. Man Mohan Chaudhari and Wangmo Dixey, the coordinator of International Tripitaka Chanting Council jointly inaugurated the programme. 

On the occasion, the Thai ambassador said that such dhamma event would help promote and spread Buddhism in the world. He expressed happiness to participate the sacred event. The ambassador further said, for the Buddhists it was a lifetime dream to set their feet at the birthplace of the Buddha. 

LDT Vice Chairman Ven. Metteyya expressed immense happiness to be able to organize International Tripitaka Chanting in Lumbini, the holy birthplace of the Buddha and such recitation program would be continued in the days ahead. He also said, “It is the untiring efforts and dedication of monks and nuns and Buddhist organizations that Buddhism is being spread in Nepal”. Pariyatti education was one of the programs, very effective to spread Buddhism, he added. 

Hon. Frakuddin Khan said such program held in Lumbini would keep a significant meaning for the followers of Buddhism and contribute to world peace. We are industrious to develop and promote Lumbini as a symbol of world peace and brotherhood, he said. The lawmaker Khan further said that Province No. 5 and his political party Nepali Congress always aimed at developing of Lumbini for the benefit of all.   

Throwing light into the objective of chanting ceremony, Ven. Maitri Mahathero said that the First International Tripitaka Chanting was organized to spread the message of peace and harmony from the birthplace of the Buddha. He further added, “Such event will create awareness on the teachings of the Buddha and help promote Buddhism.”

A peace procession was held from Lumbini Eternal Peace Flame to Mayadevi Temple before beginning of the chanting. Tripitika, the scripture of Buddhism was recited by Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhists for three days. The chanting was followed by dhamma discourse from a senior monk every day.  The Mayadevi temple was adorned with banners, lights garlands and flowers to mark the special occasion.
